If I hadn't become whatever it is I've done over my working life, I'd
want to have become an opera singer. Still not sure of the
range--probably baritone or bass-baritone. Never happened: I didn't
have the willingness or strength of vocation to commit to 7 years of
instrument-building to get into an occupation that for most of its
aspirants is appallingly political and focused on bare survival through
any jobs you can get. The teacher who heard me mangle the baritone aria
from _Andrea Chenier_ said it would take that long, seven years, for me
to build my voice. He was of the old school who would not push a singer
into auditions after 3 years. So actually English majoring won by default.
Other instruments I've messed with: saxophone(s), chromatic harmonica
(now), nylon string guitar (now), Irish flute (unbearable), even
Uilleann pipes (don't ask). I am one of those people who cannot listen
to an instrument without having to try to play it. I even considered
trying to learn the Baroque oboe. Sometimes even I can be sensible.
Usually around December 10 at 9 PM....
