EPSRC CASE Collaborative PhD Studentship
Up to £16,000 pa plus fees, subject to EPSRC-eligibility
School of Management, University of Southampton and HFO Group, West Byfield, Surrey
A CASE EPSRC PhD studentship is available from October 2005 with the topic: Consumer debt recovery models incorporating economic and operational effects.
Credit scoring, the Operational Research and statistical models that support the granting of credit, have had tremendous impact on the consumer finance industry. This project aims to estimate which customers, who have already defaulted, will be able to repay some of their debt and also to estimate how much of their debt they will be able to repay. It will investigate how one can incorporate economic effects and actions by the lender into these models. This whole area of estimating LGD (Loss given default) has become extremely important in all areas of bank lending with the introduction of the Basel New Accord in 2007, which requires banks to make such estimates. It is likely that the models built will be based on Markov chain and survival analysis ideas.
The project is co-sponsored by the HFO Group, a major firm in the consumer credit recovery area, who are interested in applying new modelling approaches.
Candidates should have a good second class honours degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline. A Masters degree or undergraduate degree in Management Science, Operational Research, Mathematical Finance or Statistics would be a very appropriate background.
In addition to tuition fees, the 3 year studentship will provide an EPSRC stipend of £14,000 p.a. in 2005/6 plus an additional £2,000 p.a. from HFO. Under EPSRC regulations, candidates are eligible for the stipend only if they: a) have been ordinarily resident in the UK throughout the 3-year period preceding the date of application, and b) have not been resident in the UK during any part of that 3-year period, wholly or mainly for the purposes of full- time education. EU but not UK residents do not qualify for the £14,000 pa stipend but will have their fees paid.
The project will be supervised by Prof Lyn Thomas (l.thomas @soton.ac.uk), Dr Bart Baesens ([log in to unmask]) and Dr. Frank McGroarty ([log in to unmask]).
Candidates should apply in the normal way to the School of Management (as described on http://www.management.soton.ac.uk/StudyOpportunities/PhD/howtoapply.php). You need not include an outline research proposal, but you should indicate in Section 9 of the application form ("Funding") that you are applying for Prof. Thomas' CASE award. You should also enclose a short description (500 words max) stating why you are interested in the project and why you believe you are suitable for it.
