Dear Chris,
I would not perform any audiometry without specific training and I
would notify your health and safety officer that you require them to
arrange training. Amplivox run frequent training courses as do other
manufacturers. They may even be able to give you 1:1 training on site.
You need to be able to perform otoscopy and understand clinical
conditions that can affect hearing, but also the pathology of
noise-induced hearing loss. As a sole OH nurse, you should be able to
interpret results at a basic level, and be competent to refer
individuals to a medical practitioner where the results are abnormal as
well as recommend appropriate hearing protection/ training.
Good luck

Hello again folks
I apologise that this is my third posting in a week, but I am in this
plant
on my own and have only recently entered Occ Health. Must say that I
have
found jiscmail to be an invaluable help and great support.
Basically, there is a portable Ampliovox 160 screening Audiometer in
the
department. My manager and the Health and Safety officer have both said
that they would like hearing screening carried out on employees.
I notice from previous notes that a predecessor carried out testing in
a
quiet room in the plant, and there is an instruction manual with the
Audiometer on how a test should be carried out.
My query is that I have never done audiometry before or have never done
any
sort of Audiometry course. Do I need to have previous experience or a
specific course?
Also, while the instruction manual states that the test can be carried
out
in a 'quiet room' using this audiometer, should there really be a sound
proof booth ?
I would be grateful for any help on this.
Regards
Chris
