Dear List
I am again working with some colleagues on a voluntary project in S Africa.
The project involves teaching basic health care including AIDS awareness and
basic health and safety to Pedi Tribes people in the Limpopo. I started
running short courses there a few years ago. Quite a challenge when some of
the people on the course spoke English as a second/third/fourth language
and some spoke none at all. (The training involved a lot of role play and
the help of those who spoke English in translating into Pedi for those not
speaking English!) Teaching how to use condoms was particularly innovative.
The course was a great success!
We are returning again this year to develop the training further and we are
also trying to set up an extremely basic occupational health service to be
run by the equivalent of an OH technician. Do any subscribers to the list
have an old but serviceable Snellen chart they could donate to us please,
particularly useful would be the charts which use the letter E rather than
the full alphabet.
We will again be teaching the AIDS awareness/safe sex sessions. If any
subscribers happen to have a supply of condoms left over from any of your
health promotion activities which we we can give out to delegates those
would also be really useful. If any subscribers do have any of these items
that they could spare please contact me off list. If you are interested in
seeing what we did last year I can send you a power point presentation which
I gave to the Salvation Army Medical Foundation on our return as the
Salvation Army had given us a donation to help us buy some equipment..
Many thanks
