I Know of an employee whose mental ill health was caused by working
shifts, impact on family life etc caused him to become extremely Ill.
months after starting shift work he finally went sick with anxiety and
depression. Assessment showed he had clearly been made ill both
physically and mentally by the changes in his work pattern.
He has returned to a day shift pattern and a year later is happy
fulfilled and working to his potential.

I agree, rehabillitation should be based at an individual level and with
a supportive and clearly defined management structure reintegration
should not create too many problems. It needs to be sensitively managed.

Is it not a case of horses for courses? Surely it will depend on the
individual concerned and the nature and cause of their mental
ill-health.
I can, however, envisage many reasons why maintaining a strong routine
with continuity of (good) management will help the person to feel secure
and able to re-integrate.

Does any one know of reasons or have any research of why an
employee
should not work shifts, after they have returned to work and are
working full time but not on shifts after suffering with
depression.
I have found that most patients have returned to their normal
shift
patterns within a period of rehab. I have one lady who says she
is
not able to do shifts because of her condition.
Many thanks
Lisa
