Hi Therona
Among the many are:
Chlamydia which causes enzootic abotion in ewes may affect NAEM thus this
client group should not assist with lambing, or handle sick animals etc..
Additionally silage (which is a feedstuff) may harbour listeria
monocytogenes, it can survive in soil or silage for up to 2 years.
Brucellosis may cause abortion in humans.
TB in pregnant mothers can be successfully treated if diagnosed early
enough. A foetus can get TB infection either by haematogenous spread
through umbilical vein to foetal liver or by ingestion or aspiration of
infected amniotic fluid.
Toxoplasmosis gondii from infected pigs and infected unpasteurised milk
affects women in first 4 months of pregnancy.
The main control measures are personal hygiene with information,
instruction and training.
