Paddy - The DSE regs state that DSE users are entitled to an eye examination
(rather than a vision test) by a suitably qualified person. However when our
Trust developed its DSE policy it decided it would not pay for optician
testing unless the employee had been seen in OH & had keystone test first.
OH recommendation is then required if the Trust has to pay for an eye test.
If they need glasses for DSE use the Trust give a £66 voucher. This is the
Trust's interpretation of the DSE regs. and as far as I am aware nobody has
challenged it. We have always done baseline keystone test on DSE users.
However I do think the DSE regs are out of date regarding eye testing, in
that most people now use computers at work - and probably use them a lot at
home as well. It is an expensive outlay to have to pay for everyone's
eyetesting at an optician when it can be done initially in-house.
