Hi
Thought I may as well add my 10pennies worth to this debate having spent 22 wonderful years in the QARANC, gained expereince of all kinds and developed my passion for Occupational Health in the army!!
I agree with Bob and Jeremy, the soldiers, sailors and airmen and women who serve their country have as much right to expect good occupational health support and provision as any other member of the population, particulalry given the risks they are exposed to. Occupational Health is at the very core of Defence Medical Doctrine, which identifies the need to prevent illness and injury......................sound familiar?!!
I spent 5years as an instructor for AMS (TA) and have to say the territorial staff I worked with were all highly committed and professional individuals.

PS Just for info Bob, I always seemed to be stagging on during my extra 2.5days!!
Glenn perhaps you could read Tommy Atkins by Rudyard Kipling, its as true of the way the Armed Forces are treated today as it was when he wrote it!!

Well said Bob, and lets not forget that the Army including the TA employ OH Nurses too - me for example - so it could actually be pertinent to this list.

Jeremy

James, on behalf of Jeremy, myself and the many other reservists that read this board,I would like to point out that although the Navy is called the ‘Senior Service’ they in fact were not formed by Henry VIII until several years AFTER the first organised militia.
Besides, the QARANC (and it’s sister services the PMRAFNS, and the QARNNS) managed to do the same level of training, fitting them to do the same job (particularly as in the case of Army Medical Services in Basra and elsewhere during GW1 and GW2, Iraq since, plus many other conflicts around the globe over the past decades since WW2) during two day weekends and a 15 day camp each year, and they still hold down a full-time civilian job! Indeed, I have often wondered what the ‘regular’ services do with the other 2.5 days they have at their disposal each week (the remaining 2.5 days accounted for by 2 days off, and 0.5 for playing sports).
May I remind you that majority of the armed forces of this country (particularly Defence Medical Services) are made up of circa 70% reservists/TA and 30% ‘regular troops’. To suggest that the Reserve Services ‘do not do it for real’ belittles the skill, expertise and dedication that the volunteers bring to the Armed Forces of the Crown, and shows the standard bigoted attitude and lack of understanding of the so called ‘regular’ forces…………
Bob
