Dear all

We are in the difficult position of trying to manage latex sensitivity
within our PCT to ensure we comply with quite agressive local HSE
enforcement action (yes an improvement notice) served against
neighbouring
Trusts. The local HSE inspector and EMAS physican have been very
proactive
within our locale and have served an improvement notice against one
Trust
for failure to train employees in the hazards of wearing latex gloves
and
another for failing to protect employees from the risks of developing
latex
sensitivity. The HSE have recommended, amongst other things, that
overall
risk assessments be carried out which firstly determine the
extent/status of
employees with latext sensitivty in the first place, whether type 4 or
type
1, eg intra employement latex sensitivity screening exercises. We are
adopting the same approach because we do not want our Trust to be named
on
the said HSE name and shame enforcement database held within the public
domain. We are very much over a barrel as far as the HSE are concerned
and
would rather follow their policy, albeit considered by a few as over the
top
than risk a drop in public and employee confidence by awaiting them to
visit
us and draconically enforce us to carry out certain actions. HSE action
has
been very proactive within our geographical area over the last year and
we
hope our latex action plan will at least placate these enforcers.
