BNMI
The Banff New Media Institute (BNMI) is a world-class research and content
innovation Centre, celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2005. The BNMI
focuses on the cultures of expression and use, enabling the creation of
applications and technologies for participatory culture. New media at The
Banff Centre converges art, design, architecture, dance, performance,
computer science, engineering and science research with education, health,
cultural industries, social sciences, humanities, and other constantly
emerging forms of content. Fundamental to the BNMI is the belief that the
creative sector, artists and cultural industries, in collaboration with
scientists, social scientists and humanists have a critical role to play
in developing technologies that work for human betterment.
POSITION DESCRIPTION:
BNMI is having its 10th anniversary this year. To celebrate we’re putting
up a show in the Walter Philips Gallery,publishing a book, hosting reunion
summits, publishing an online comprehensive archive of 10 years of events,
releasing a complete DVD archive of HorizonZero and, developing more tools
for collaborative new media practice! In October 2005 The BNMI will be
hosting the first ever international Art History of new media conference
in partnership with Leonardo and Humbolt University.
As the 10th Anniversary Special Project Work study you will be assigned to
work on all of these projects. This position works with book editors, the
Banff Centre press, curators, researchers, journalists, faculty, senior
artists and BNMI staff. This position assists in maintaining and
developing the print and digital archives, provides research and retrieval
assistance into the archives, assists with the delivery of events and
festivals, assists with marketing and promotions of the 10th anniversary
and maintains the vital communication link between all internal and
external persons involved in the planning and delivery of the 10th
anniversary program.
This position is an exciting opportunity to be involved in a fast paced,
high profile year long public celebration of the BNMI.
SPECIFIC DUTIES:
Archival and research support for the print and digital archives
Administrative support to the Coordinator and Editors of the 10th
anniversary book
Research and programming support for the exhibition curators
Arts administration and event delivery support
Active participation in all 10th anniversary events and activities
Provide fundraising and administration support as required
Actively promote the 10th anniversary via the press, alumni and events
Basic administration support such as photocopying and material
preparations
Assistance with marketing and communications activities
QUALIFICATIONS:
Proven project coordination experience
Computer and new media literacy
Strong oral and written communication skills
Great organizational abilities
A passion for the arts and an interest in new media
The ability to multitask and work to deadlines
Experience working as a project researcher would be an asset
The ability to represent the BNMI in a confident and professional manner

Work study programs are intended to provide the participant with a
combination of learning opportunities and supervised, practical work
related to the participant’s learning objectives. Learning opportunities
may be formal sessions and/or workshops or they may be informal
opportunities arising out of the situation of the moment. The work portion
of the experience will primarily focus on activities of TBC. Work
components will be in the areas of expertise of the TBC including work
associated with performance or event production activities, work providing
technical support to artists, work in arts management, administration and
arts marketing. It is recognized that work study participants bring prior
training and expertise to their work study term and in many cases the work
experience will provide and opportunity to adapt their current skills to
the media arts environment.
Participation in a work study term is considered to be full-time study,
rather that employment. All participants sign a learning contract that
assists in the evaluation of their work study experience.
