Dear List,
Perhaps a small snippet from the Navigate festival might help to get
this this months' debate started.
The role of new media technologies played a very varied role in the
different 'performances': Straightforward display technologies
(digital video in Lone Twin's narrative); documentation of physical
performance (digital video of Tim Brennan); mixed media 'narrow-cast'
where computers and magnetic audio tapes were used to produce an
individual cassette tape for each participant (Sneha Solanki and
Duncan Speakman); and GPS-controlled digital audio soundtracks on a
coach-tour around Newcastle (e-Xplo).
Sally Jane Norman also traced a history of performance and live media
from gladiators, surfing, and automata.
What particularly performative characteristics of the different media
are being used here, and are there other good examples of 'live' new
media art?
Yours
Beryl
