The Natural and Environmental Disaster Information Exchange System (NEDIES)
project of the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre in Ispra, Italy,
is organising a session on “NATECH disasters: When natural hazards trigger
technological disasters” at the European Geosciences Union’s (EGU) General
Assembly, Vienna, Austria, April 2–7, 2006. This session will be organised
in the frame of the Natural Hazards umbrella session of EGU 2006.
There is increasing awareness that natural disasters can trigger
technological disasters (NATECH disasters) and that these conjoint events
may pose tremendous threats to regions, which are unprepared for these
types of events. Our interdisciplinary session on NATECH disasters aims at
bringing together scientists, engineers, disaster risk managers and
decision makers who will discuss the vulnerability of technological
facilities and systems to natural hazards, including the potential for
domino effects. The requirements for NATECH-specific disaster prevention
and preparedness plans will also be addressed. In addition, authors are
invited to present methods and tools to assess the NATECH risk in urban
environments.
The session conveners are:
Dr. Elisabeth Krausmann (European Commission, Joint Research Centre, Ispra,
Italy, NEDIES project) and Dr. Ana Maria Cruz (Univ. North Texas, Denton,
USA, Dept. for Public Administration and Univ. Kyoto, Japan, Disaster
Prevention Research Institute).
The session organisers are exploring the possibility to publish selected
papers in a special issue of the journal “Natural Hazards”.
If you are interested in contributing to our session on NATECH disasters,
please submit your abstract by January 13, 2006, following the instructions
