I am pasting in a message by Scott Rains ([log in to unmask]) to the GEOABLE discussion list (see below).
This makes interesting reading in relation to our prior discussions of disability, and John Twigg and others might want to follow up.

HURRICANE KATRINA QUESTION
I've been pondering over Hurricane Katrina, Universal Design, and tourism.
It occurs to me that as New Orleans is rebuilt with federal money the ADA
will (or at least "could" ) play a major role in mandating accessible
infrastructure. I can also see monitoring compliance being a nightmare and
holding up reconstruction by challenging ADA violations gaining us huge
backlash.
So, thinking of New Orleans as a major tourist draw, I want to seed the idea
of using UD as a competetive edge for the tourist industry when
infrastructure is rebuilt. We have several months to get leverage with the
right agencies, contractors, businesses, and politicians but it seems time
right now to start the conversation within the incousive tourism community.
I have started with the ideas here but there is a need for concretization:

Any suggestions from your work?
