Associate Professor/Professor In Risk Management
(Natural Disasters or Terrorism)

Applications are invited for appointment as Associate Professor or Professor
in Risk Management (Natural Disasters or Terrorism) in the School of Safety
Science.The School of Safety Science, in the Faculty of Science, currently
undertakes a range of cutting edge research in safety science, offers a
successful suite of undergraduate and postgraduate programs in risk
management, environmental science and health and safety, and is a source of
vital expertise to industry, government and the community. The focus of its
research to date has been mostly in medium to high probability risks and
risk management in relation to: safety in the community; transport system
risks; and workplace risks.

The School is seeking to appoint a new professorial position to focus on
high consequence risks, preferably in Australia, precipitated by natural
disasters such as tidal waves, volcanoes, earthquakes, fire, floods, violent
storms and/or abrupt climate change or by acts of terrorism. The focus of
the successful appointee's research could be investigation of: the nature of
the risks; factors that may contribute to the risks; community and
organisational response to the risks; and/or modelling and managing the
consequences.

The new professorial position is expected to: develop collaborative research
teams that will integrate relevant strengths within and beyond the School;
contribute at all levels to the teaching programs of the School; participate
as appropriate in the management/administration of the School; and develop
public programs that will effectively communicate risk management issues
related to disasters and crisis situations.

Essential criteria for appointment at either level: a PhD or equivalent
qualification; a solid record of achievement in research and academic
publication in crisis/disaster risk management or in a field that can be
applied to disaster/crisis research, a record of excellence in teaching and
supervision at undergraduate and postgraduate levels; an excellent record of
success in attracting research funding; the ability to develop new areas of
research in disaster and crisis risk management; a record of achievement in
administration in a tertiary institution or equivalent; experience in
implementing equity and diversity policies and programs, and knowledge of
OHS responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant OHS training.

Additional essential criteria for appointment as Professor: a distinguished
record of scholarship and excellent academic leadership; a distinguished
record of research and publication in crisis/disaster risk management or in
a field that can be applied to disaster/crisis research.

Desirable criteria for appointment at either level: an interest in fostering
interdisciplinarity; capacity to develop and extend the School's interface
with other disciplinary areas and outside organisations.

The salary range for Associate Professor is A$90,939 - A$99,880 per year
dependent on qualifications and experience and for Professor is A$116,278
per year. Academics may undertake a limited amount of higher consultative
work. Women and people from equity groups are encouraged to apply. The
University reserves the right to fill the position by invitation or not to
fill the position.The appointee may be expected to serve as Head of School
for a term or terms if so requested.
