Mangroves and reefs offer a degree of natural protection against sea surges
and tsunami waves; the energy contained is dissipated by these natural
obstructions. Dunes offer another kind of protection. If reefs and
mangroves have been removed for development of any kind, not only is that
development made to be more exposed to the hazard but so also is its
hinterland. An ngo or two are engaged in post-tsunami replanting of
mangroves, which have also been planted on similar coastines as a
protection against cyclonic storm surges.
Thus generic man's vulnerability is increased by his erosion of these
protective features, another example of difficulty inherent in sectoral
activity separation.
My Best Wishes to the project -
