An EPSRC-funded Ph. D. studentship is available from 1 Oct 2005
to work with Jeremy Hutson at the University of Durham on the
theory of cold and ultracold molecules. This is a very exciting
area on the boderline between physics and chemistry where major
experimental advances have been made over the last 2 or 3 years
and theoretical backup is urgently needed.
The project will involve calculating potential energuy surfaces
for systems of current experimental interest and carrying out
scattering calculations at ultralow energies to explore the
novel properties.
For an overview of recent advances in the field, see the special
isse of the European Physical Journal D for November 2004, on
Cold Polar Molecules. For my own group's publications in the field,
see http://www.dur.ac.uk/j.m.hutson/publ.html
Prospective students should have (or expect to obtain in 2005)
a 2.i M.Chem. or M.Phys. degree in Chemistry or Physics or its
equivalent, and should supply the names, addresses and email details
for two referees who can write about their academic achievements.
Durham is a small historic city in the north-east of England, about
3 hours from London by train. Its Chemistry department is one of
the highest-ranked in the country. More information is available on

Because of EPSRC rules, the studentship will pay fees and living
expenses for a UK student, but only fees (no living expenses) for
an EU student from outside the UK. Non-EU students are not eligible.
[The rules on who counts as a "UK student" are complicated, but in
general terms it means someone who has lived in the UK for at least
3 years _not_ for the purpose of receiving education.]
There is no specific deadline, but the studentship may be allocated
when a suitable student applies.
