PHILOSOPHY AND HISTORIOGRAPHY

The aim of this conference is to explore the relationship between philosophy
and historiography, focusing on the historiography of philosophy,
mathematics and science. Themes to be covered include:
• historiography of philosophy (as concerned with the theory and
practice of writing history of philosophy)
• history of historiography of philosophy (as concerned with the ways
in which the history of philosophy has been constructed through history, for
example by particular philosophers in motivating their own work)
• the relationship between historiography of philosophy and
historiography of mathematics, science and other disciplines
• the relationship between historiography of philosophy and philosophy
of history
SPEAKERS include: Michael Beaney, Bernadette Bensaude-Vincent, Mark Bevir,
Vivienne Brown, Teresa Castelão-Lawless, Cristina Chimisso, José Ferreirós,
Gad Freudenthal, Hanjo Glock, Jeremy Gray, Sarah Hutton, Susan James, Nick
Jardine, Martin Kusch, Chris Lawn, Quentin Skinner, Adrian Wilson.
CALL FOR PAPERS: Please send an abstract (max. 500 words), preferably by
email, to Dr Cristina Chimisso or Dr. Michael Beaney by 31 October 2005. The
provisional programme will be drawn up in November. One or more sessions
will be scheduled for postgraduate papers. Anyone interested in giving a
paper at the conference is invited to contact the organizers informally to
discuss possibilities.
