UNIVERSITY OF DURHAM
TAUGHT MA IN THE HISTORY AND PHILOSOPHY OF SCIENCE AND MEDICINE (HPSM)
DESCRIPTION OF THE PROGRAMME
The University of Durham’s Department of Philosophy, Centre for the
History of Medicine and Disease (CHMD), and School for Health are
pleased to announce their new Taught Masters Programme (MA) in the
History and Philosophy of Science and Medicine (HPSM).
This one-year (two years part-time) programme will provide students with
a deeper understanding of historical, cultural and philosophical issues
in science and medicine from Antiquity up to the present day. Using
socio-cultural models to analytical approaches its primary aim is to
show how the intellectual vibrancy of the humanities is relevant to a
deeper understanding of past and present medical and scientific issues.
The wide spectrum of academic staff from the Department of Philosophy
and the School for Health allows students to focus their papers on a
wide variety of topics, some of which include bioethics and the history
and medicine, the history and philosophy of science, and environmental
philosophy.
Upon completion, the HPSM MA will give students the skills necessary for
inter- and trans-disciplinary work that can be applied to future
doctoral studies as well as to a broad range of other applications
within the media, the public sector, NGOs, etc.
The Wellcome Trust, London has been recognised this programme for its
masters awards funding scheme.
The Philosophy Department received the highest mark in the 2001 teaching
assessment (QAA 24 points) and the high evaluation of 5 in the 2001
Research Assessment Exercise (RAE).
