Dear all,
Further to the request some time ago from several list members to clarify
the purpose of Media Watch, here is a belated response.
First I have delayed responding to see how the list would settle down
following the changeover from the Stirling University server to Jiscmail. I
think that much of this settling down has now occurred.
Second, the original purpose of Media warch was two fold. First to
circulate material on media issues around the attack on Iraq and Second
circulate information and encourage people to complain about bias and
misrepresentation.
I think that this purpose still largely holds and that people use the list
on this basis.
Obviously the themes addressed on the list have tended to be wider than just
the issue of media and Iraq but the key thing to bear in mind is that this
is a list for watching the media. It is NOT a list for general issues about
injustice and inequality and the like. There are lots of other (better)
lists for that.
Third, the general rule in posting material from other sources is that the
source and a link if possible should be included at the top.
Given all of this, which is generally accepted and fairly consensual (as far
as I can tell), I would ask people to keep the remit in mind when they post.
Lastly, I have been wondering about how to make this list more effective as
an information or campaigning tool. As ever, responses on this question are
very welcome.
Hope this helps.
David
