The Baltimore Consort
will perform on Saturday, June 6, at 8 p.m. in Peabody's Griswold Hall as
part of the international Renaissance Conference. In a program titled
"Cancionero," the Consort, with sensational Brazilian countertenor José
Lemos, presents the stirring Romances, lively Villancicos and
Improvisations circa 1500 from a turbulent time in Spain's history. Prior
to the final defeat of the Moors, and expulsion of the Jews in 1492, Spain
was a land of three cultures. This is apparent in anonymous works in
palace songbooks, works of the influential courtly composer Juan del
Encina, and in the books of the vihuelistas.
The Baltimore Consort was founded by Peabody faculty members back in the
'80s and is now internationally known as a premier early music ensemble
that has recorded eleven discs on the Dorian label. Over the years the
composition of the Baltimore Consort has changed but the Peabody
connections have remained strong. Current members include: former faculty
member Mary Anne Ballard (viols, rebec); current faculty member Mark Cudek
(cittern, viols, Renaissance guitar), Custer La Rue, soprano, (currently
on leave) an award-winning Peabody alumna; Larry Lipkis (viols,
recorders); Ronn McFarlane (lutes), a former Peabody faculty member who
has released over 20 recordings on the Dorian label; and Mindy Rosenfeld,
a Peabody alumna.
