In association with the Centre for Ancient and Modern Studies and the
forthcoming Mediaeval Studies Centre, the postgraduate division “Pre-
and Early Modern Cultures” of the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg
will award
seven doctoral scholarships
in each of the two doctoral research programmes
“History and Narrative” (I)
and
“Realms of Learning and Life: Court, Convent and University.
Comparative Mediaeval Studies 500-1600” (II)
with effect from the 1st October 2005. The scholarships will run for
two years in the first instance with the possibility of an extension
for an additional year. The value of the scholarships is set according
to the stipulations of the state law on postgraduate funding. The basic
level of support will be €820 per month, alongside a parental
contribution and additional funds to offset ancillary research costs.
The following disciplines are represented in programme I: History,
Classics, English, Romance Studies, Slavonic Studies and Philosophy.
The broad framework covers forms of representation of the past in
classical antiquity and the role of the ancient world in theoretical,
factual and fictional discourses of the modern era.
The following disciplines are represented in programme II: Archaeology
(Christian archaeology, Mediaeval archaeology, and History of Byzantine
Art), English, German Studies, History, History of Art, History of Law,
History of Medicine, Mediaeval Latin Studies, Musicology, Philosophy,
Romance Studies, Slavonic Studies and Theology. The broad framework
covers the analysis and mapping of key social systems and formations as
well as theoretical and literary discourses of the mediaeval and early
modern periods, from the perspective of realms of life and learning in
diachronic and synchronic paradigms.
Comparative and/or interdisciplinary approaches are particularly
welcome. The languages of the programmes are German, English and
French.
Within the aegis of the forthcoming Freiburg Graduate School, the
doctoral research programmes offer a new form of supervision, a
curriculum leading to additional key qualifications, as well as the
opportunities to obtain to study abroad at partner universities and to
take part in summer schools and international colloquia.
The award of a scholarship is dependent upon an above-average
undergraduate qualification. At the point of application, applicants
should not be over 28 years of age. The following documents are
required for the application: Curriculum Vitae (including a detailed
statement of academic career to date) with covering letter, school
leaving and degree certificates, references from two university tutors
confirming the applicant’s aptitude for postgraduate study and a
research proposal of not more than 10 sides. The research proposal
should incorporate an explanation of the topic and its relationship to
existing scholarship; an exposition of the central problems to be
addressed; methodological considerations relating to the undertaking of
the project; an outline chapter plan and schedule of work and a
bibliography.
