The Seminar
This event is designed for postgraduate students and brings together
practitioners from the worlds of the media and politics together with
academic researchers in the policy field. The purpose of the seminar is to
explore some of the key issues involved in film and broadcasting policy
research. These include the framing of research objectives, questions of
methodology, problems of access to sources and the use and dissemination of
findings. Applications are invited from all postgraduate students with an
interest in this area (contemporary or historical), but priority will be
given to doctoral students who must obtain the approval of their
supervisor. Within the constraints of time, participants will have the
opportunity to present their work to a group of peers and to receive
feedback from staff and students. This seminar is one of a series of
postgraduate training events run by the AHRB Centre for British Film and
Television Studies. Details of the Centre are available at www.bftv.ac.uk
The event at Edward King House, Lincoln, starts at 6.15pm on Thursday 19
May and ends at 4.30pm on Friday 20 May, 2005. Professor John Hill (former
member of the Board of the UK Film Council and author of numerous
publications on British cinema) will deliver the opening, keynote
presentation on the Thursday evening. Speakers on the Friday include Dr.
Gillian Doyle, University of Stirling (author of Understanding Media
Economics and Media Ownership), Peter Goddard, University of Liverpool
(researching the history of current affairs regulation in the Granada and
ITC/Ofcom archives), Simon Pitts, Controller of Regulatory Afffairs at ITV
and Carole Tongue, expert on public service broadcasting and former Member
of the European Parliament with responsibility for audio-visual policy. The
event is residential and registration is free, but places are limited and
must be booked in advance (the application form can be obtained from the
Centre Administrator).
The organiser of the Training Day is Professor Sylvia Harvey of the
University of Lincoln.
Registration Details
Research students currently enrolled at UK universities can apply for free
admission to the Postgraduate Training Day. The closing date for
applications is Monday 25 April, 2005.
Applications are invited from UK postgraduate research students working in
film and television studies, giving details of current enrolment in a
higher education institution, area of research, an academic CV and a brief
statement of reasons for wishing to attend. The application should include
an indication of approval from the applicant's supervisor.
Space permitting, MA students and others with an interest in policy
research may be able to attend the event. Booking is essential and places
will be allocated on a first come first served basis once applications from
research students have been considered. Those interested in attending

For those whose institutions are unable to offer financial support, a
number of small bursaries will be available to assist with travel and
accommodation costs.
