INFORMATION SHEET:
Invitation to participants:
You are being invited to take part in a research project conducted by a
postgraduate student at the University of Sheffield. Before you decide, it
is important for you to understand why the research is being done and what
it will involve. Please take time to read the following information
carefully and discuss it with others if you wish. Ask me if there is
anything that is not clear or if you would like more information. Take
time to decide whether or not you wish to take part. Thank you for reading
this.
What is the purpose of the project?
This project is an investigation into the image of certain professions and
the effect the media can have on these. The media can be very influential
in affecting how people view a profession or culture, for example, and the
project aims to look at this in more depth.
Do I have to take part?
It is up to you to decide whether or not to take part. Refusal to take
part will involve no penalty or loss of benefits to which you are
otherwise entitled. If you do decide to take part you will be given this
information sheet to keep. If you decide to take part you are still free
to withdraw at any time, without penalty or loss of benefits, and without
giving a reason. If you wish to withdraw any answers you have given,
please de no hesitate to contact me.
What are the possible benefits of taking part?
Whilst there are no immediate benefits for those participating in the
project, it is hoped that the answers you provide will help to show one
way or another how the media can influence an opinion.
Will my taking part in this project be kept confidential?
All information that is collected about you during the course of the
research will be kept strictly confidential. Your name or any details
identifying you will not be taken to ensure complete anonymity.
In accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998 the data will not be kept
any longer than necessary and unnecessary data will not be collected.
What will happen to the results of the research project?
The results will be published as part of my final dissertation at the
University of Sheffield. It is likely to be available from January 2006
onwards.
Who has reviewed the project?
The University of Sheffield Research Ethics Committee has reviewed this
project.
