Dear all,
Those interested in the provision of learning spaces in universities may
be interested in the current discussion on the ISL JISCMail List. Len
Holmes' challenge to clarify what we mean by 'learning' is heavy on
philosophy and linguistics but he has a point - it may help us to be
clearer about the ways in which we use this word.
On a more concrete level, there are the JISC initiatives:

Subject: [M25-LT-GROUP] Cybercafes/social learning spaces
At UCL we're reviewing our IT-based teaching/learning space provision,
and have been impressed by the cybercafes or 'social learning spaces'
that some institutions have set up. These spaces commonly combine
workspaces with fixed PCs, support for laptops, comfy chairs/sofas, and
a snack bar.
Students (and often staff) can work individually or in groups, in a
comfortable relaxed environment. Unlike a library or a traditional IT
cluster room, discussion is not considered an intrusion, and eating and
drinking does not break the rules.
I'd be really interested to hear if your institution has developed (or
is considering developing) such a facility.
Fiona.
