29 April & 6 May
Return on Investment for libraries and information services NEW
This is a two day course split by a week.
Speakers: Boyd Hendriks and Ian Wooler
This two-day course deals in pragmatic and clear ways the issues of
organisational benefits around information expressed in ROI, Business Cases,
Intangible Value and the activities and responsibilities connected with
these topics. Now more than ever it is vital for information services to
show in a convincing and reliable way the clear and measured benefits of its
efforts in the core processes and knowledge assets of the organisation.
Investments in information technology like intranets, portals and search
technology etc. and expectations from knowledge management and intellectual
capital make the need for clear understanding of results even more
important. You will learn how to do the research within your organisation,
how to present your projected results to a board of directors and how to put
a plan of action together. The structure of the two-day-course provides
participants with the opportunity to present back and get feedback on
high-level Business Case / ROI results obtained from exercises within their
own organisation, extended with a first draft of a plan of action.

Basic essentials of change management NEW
Speaker: Ruth Sanderson
Organizations are constantly changing in order to survive, compete or lead
their field. If you're not in control of the change then it can feel
overwhelming. This leads to stress, rejection of the change and poor
performance. All of which have a cost on the business and the individuals
concerned.
If you're involved in leading or implementing change in your organization
then this 1 day course will provide you with some key essentials of good
change management and some common pitfalls which we encourage you to avoid.

9 & 10 May
Introduction to corporate finance
Speakers: Tudor Spencer and Mike Bromberg
This two day course provides an introduction to corporate finance relevant
to the needs of information specialists required to carry out business
research in the area of business funding and investment. Corporate finance
presents particular difficulties for the researcher in terms of the sheer
range of topics it embraces, the complexity of much of its subject matter
and the extensive use of jargon by practitioners. Day one concentrates on
the financial markets and the sources of funding available to business. The
second day investigates decisions and risk management together with mergers
and acquisitions. Throughout the two days, the content is illustrated with
recent reports in the financial press enabling delegates to relate the
theory to the business world.

11 May
Communities of practice
Speaker: Elizabeth Lank plus visiting practitioner
There is a growing evidence that the most effective means of transferring
knowledge is people to people rather than people to or from computers. Many
organisations that have invested in technology tools to share information
are now adding a further strand to their knowledge management strategy,
namely support for and facilitation of 'communities of practice' and other
cross-boundary groups.
This one day workshop will help you to identify the different types of
communities that emerge in organisations, how they can be supported and
encouraged to share knowledge and information in order to be able to
contribute more effectively to the business strategies, harnessed to support
your knowledge and information sharing strategy and the practical steps
necessary to turn them into strategic assets for the organisation and how to
evaluate the value they are contributing to the organisation. The day will
be highly interactive and will include time for the participants to share
stories from their own experience, as well as hearing an in-depth case study
from a visiting practitioner.
