Researching private equity
Speaker: Sylvia James

Private equity companies have been investing in new companies with new
products and services as well as established businesses for generations and
represent the pioneering end of the corporate finance world. Not
surprisingly, companies wanting venture capital funds have been beating a
path to the door of the private equity entrepreneur, providing impressive
packages of data on their opportunity. However, the latest internet
speculative bubble has highlighted the essential need for anyone involved in

that can be conducted constructively in this specialised area.

and sources. This two day course provides a broad introduction to many
areas of business research and is an ideal starter course.

Digital repositories for research, public and governmental organisations
Speaker : Ron Davies Date : 27 October Many research, public and
governmental organisations have as part of their mission the dissemination
of information to the general public or to broadly-based communities of
interest. In order to meet this goal, they create and provide access to a
wide range of formally and informally published documents; their expert
staff members may also be involved in publishing in the trade or academic
press, in making presentations and in developing learning materials. All
these documents can be of long-term value to the organisation in terms of
explaining its mission, furthering its goals, or influencing communities.
Though nowadays all of this material will exist in electronic form, it may
be hidden on private computer drives, be difficult to find, or at risk of
loss or distruction over the longer term.
Institutional repositories of digital materials can be of as much value to
these kinds of organizations as they are to institutes of higher and further
education, the current innovators in this field. This course will explain
the business models that underly a digital repository, the technology
options that are available and the issues that need to be considered in
developing a respository, including metadata creation, workflow processing,
accessibility and digital preservation.

Transforming customer care in information services: foundation programme
Speaker: Ruth Sanderson
Date: 28 October
Ever been into a shop and felt the assistant didn't care about you. Or been
on the phone and thought the other person wasn't really listening to what
you needed. Did you recommend the company or service to others afterwards
or did you tell people about the awful customer service. For most of us
it's the latter and yet it's acknowledged that valuing and caring for your
customers is fundamental to the departments growth and long term future.
Wouldn't it be great to have people out there positively raving about how
great your Information Service is? This one day workshop gives you practical
advice on providing truly transformational customer care. You'll learn how
to attract the right customers, develop ways of diffusing potential problems
and revisit some fundamental customer principles in the light of your new
knowledge.
