"They called Whitechapel Library the University of the Ghetto because it
was just that for tens of thousands of poor Jewish immigrants who lived
in the surrounding streets of the East End of London.
"The blue plaque on the wall commemorates the first world war poet Isaac
Rosenberg, who first discovered the world of art and books there, as did
the painter Mark Gertler and the first wave of working-class Jewish
playwrights, Bernard Kops and Arnold Wesker.
