Here's a reminder of Cilip in London's May evening meeting:
Working together: meeting basic skills needs in Croydon
Date: Tuesday 10 May 2005
Time: 6 for 6.30 pm
Venue: The Sekforde Arms, Sekforde Street, London EC1
(Map reference: http://digbig.com/3pmf)
Speakers: Fiona Tarn & Jana Cameron
*********************************************************************
Fiona Tarn and Jana Cameron will discuss the 'Get On' project, which
developed as the result of Croydon library staff wishing to apply what
they had learned on an 'awareness-training' course.
Learning & Skills Council funding enabled the project to add special stock
to most of the borough's libraries, as well as allowing this stock to be
promoted to Basic Skills classes and community groups. A Community
Information pack was also created.
Fiona attended the pre-launch event for Inspiring Learning for All (ILFA)
in 2004, following which the 'Getting to Know Croydon' course, devised by
museums, local studies and library staff, was developed. A pilot course
was run for a New Deal ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages)
class in early 2005. Library and Museum staff are working on a bid to
develop this exciting work further.
Fiona Tarn, who is trained to Basic Skills Awareness Level 2 for frontline
staff, works part-time in Croydon Central Library where, amongst other
duties, she has responsibility for basic skills development.
Jana Cameron, who is involved in the Getting to Know Croydon course, is
Assistant Education Officer for the Croydon Museum Service. She is
evaluating and improving the services and resources available to Basic
Skills students and tutors. Previously Jana was Assistant Interpretation
Officer at the Museum of London.
CILIP in London evening meetings are free and open to all with a
professional interest in the topic. Refreshments will be available
afterwards. As space is limited, please let us know if you are coming.
