I was surprised to see Adrian's advice below. Yes, I thoroughly agree we
do not want to see advertisements for toothpaste or .. (there's quite a
lot worse than toothpaste). But sometimes I receive a message about
professional events that I think would interest other members of CILIP (
for example, a workshop organised by NISO or NKOS, or even the BCS) and
I am tempted to forward it to the List. Strictly speaking, announcements
of such events are promotional, and they don't come from CILIP or its
Groups or Branches. But I still think most of us welcome notice of that
sort of thing. How strictly should we interpret that guideline?

Following on from this discussion, I wanted to post the following
guidance
on behalf of CILIP, which I hope list users will find useful.
We would like to reiterate that the LIS-CILIP list guidelines at
http://www.cilip.org.uk/professionalguidance/discussion/liscilip.htm do
ask
users not 'to post any promotional information that does not involve
CILIP,
its Groups or Branches'. LIS-CILIP is not moderated, nor is it closed to
non-members of CILIP, but we would urge all those who make use of it do
so
responsibly and in a way which complies with these guidelines.
