Course Outline
--------------
"Taxonomy" is a term that is frequently used, particularly in connection
with the organisation of information on Web sites, but its meaning is
often obscure. This meeting aims to clarify the nature of the beast and to
abolish fears of the unknown. It will show how taxonomies relate to other
ways of grouping and labelling information resources and how the best way
to make them meet users' needs is to build them with a knowledge of sound
underlying principles. The day will contain talks, practical work and
demonstrations, covering topics such as the following:
* What is a taxonomy?
* Thesauri, classification schemes, subject heading systems and ontologies
- what's the difference?
* Free text searching or structured vocabularies?
* Automatic clustering and taxonomy creation
* Existing systems - buy, borrow or build your own?
* Principles and standards for structured vocabularies
* Practical issues of taxonomy construction
* Software for building and editing taxonomies
* Using taxonomies when searching and browsing - interfaces to help users
* How much work is needed? Long term commitment to maintenance and
development.
