It has also provoked some discussion among health librarians over on

This is not an issue for public libraries alone. It seems unlikely that our
part of the profession will have immunity. Hence the importance of some of
the leadership strategy initiatives coming out of the implementation of the

This has come from an MLA press release which is the first stage of a
national promotion campaign for libraries - see
http://www.mla.gov.uk/news/press_article.asp?articleid=843 for the press
release. It is being done in conjunction with CILIP and the Society of
Chief Librarians to raise the profile of public libraries.

I saw the item on Breakfast News. A few interviews with people in the
street, who all described the same old stereotype; an interview with a
librarian on how he was trying to improve the image of public libraries
in Liverpool, a brief chat with a PR person who didn't look old enough
to shave but who recommended there should be a campaign based on
Casanova being a librarian.... someone did send an e mail in which they
read out pointing out the real problem is the appalling pay library
staff get after they have done a Masters in the subject. Just about the
only good to thing to come out of that piece, I felt.
