Here is a belated report on the Annual Meeting of the Council of the
European Association for Middle Eastern Studies (EurAMES), held in Durham on
14 September 2005.
Delegates from Cyprus, Germany, Great Britain, Norway, Poland and Sweden
were also present.
The President, Prof. Günter Meyer, reported that activities in the preceding
year had concentrated on two main projects:-
1. The EurAMES Info Service. This free E-mail news service providing
information on forthcoming conferences, research projects and opportunities,
job vacancies, etc. has been continued and expanded rapidly in 2004-05. It
now reaches about 3000 scholars, students, journalists, diplomats and others
interested in Middle Eastern studies. I hope most librarians also receive
it: if you do not, please send a message to [log in to unmask]
Please use this address also if you wish to distribute any relevant
announcements or information.
2. Islam Research Directory. This database was established by the
Goethe-Institut in Munich and the Deutsche Orient-Institut (DOI) in Hamburg,
with the support of the German Federal Ministry of Co-operation, as an
instrument of "systematic stock-taking and networking between scholars,
journalists, and political decision-makers in Islamic countries and their
counterparts in German and European research set-ups and mediator
institutions". It includes registers of Institutions, Scholars/Experts,
Focal Points, Libraries, Documentation Centres, Periodicals and Financial
Assistance/Projects. These can be consulted at
http://www.islamresearchdirectory.org/en/
EurAMES is now negotiating with the two Institutes to update and develop the
Directory into a new database of "European Expertise on the Middle East and
North Africa". It is offering a substantial financial contribution as well
as information coming from its members.
3. Other news. EurAMES is supporting and participating in the Second World
Congress of Middle Eastern Studies (WoCMES) in Amman, 11-16 June 2006. A
specific EurAMES session is planned. For more information, see
http://www.wocmes2.org/
EurAMES Council member Simeon Evstatiev, of the Centre for Intercultural
Studies and Partnerships in the University of Sofia, is interested in
cooperating with other European institutions in a research project on
Muslims in Southeastern Europe. See

Another Council member, Dr Tom Sinclair of the University of Cyprus,
proposes that EurAMES should put on its website information on all Middle
East studies courses in Europe, especially programmes established as a
result of the Barcelona Process. This will be further discussed.
The next Council meeting will take place in Amman in June 2006.
