CRITICAL APPRAISAL SKILLS FOR HEALTHCARE LIBRARIANS *NEW
14 SEPTEMBER 2005, LONDON
Information quality is of huge interest to LIS professionals, but critical appraisal skills are often perceived to be beyond the boundaries of library and information practice. This workshop challenges that view and provides an introduction to the process and techniques used when critically appraising research papers in the healthcare field.
BENEFITS OF ATTENDING
This workshop is designed to give you the skills to critically evaluate and interpret research papers.
By the end of the event participants will have:
* gained a clear understanding of what is meant by 'critical appraisal'
* reflected on the relevance of critical appraisal to LIS
* learned the two major practical applications of critical appraisal
* investigated the similarities and differences between critical appraisal and quality evaluation
* distinguished between different types of study and research methods
* discovered how to use toolkits to critically appraise a systematic review article and a randomized control clinical trial
* gained a new perspective on the journal literature
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
This introductory workshop is suitable for all LIS professionals working in the healthcare field. This is not a workshop on evidence based medicine or medical statistics, and no prior knowledge or experience of critical appraisal is required. It will benefit information and healthcare professionals working in NHS hospitals, pharmaceutical companies, medical schools and other healthcare organisations.
WORKSHOP LEADER
Alain Besson, Information Skills Librarian, St Bartholomew's and the Royal London School of Medicine and Dentistry (Queen Mary, University
