I have to confess that just before Bill gave his presentation we shared a
long telephone discussion about his challenge. You might be interested to
see the list of points of rejoinder that I have subsequently recorded on my
blog:

I am afraid that my conclusion (thus far) was that we are "not proven"
(which of course doesn't mean we are not effective!)

Subject: Lancet article
I think someone has already pointed out the article in this week's
Lancet entitled, "Literature searches: look before you leap". The author
Bill Summerskill presented one of the final papers at the Umbrella
conference on Saturday, and I was certainly inspired by what he said. I
would like to respond to his challenge but only have anecdotal evidence
and that isn't good enough. Do other NHS librarians feel that we could
"generate high-quality evidence to answer the question definitively" -
if so, I'd be happy to take part in such a study.
