Hello, everyone. I've been looking over library filters for Ovid MEDLINE and Ovid CINAHL. I wonder the reasoning behind using one keyboard shortcut over another. For keyword searching, which do you use for what situation? Notice they search different fields in the different databases. The definitions for these features are below. Please email me, and I'll summarize to the lists.
Personally, I usually use .mp. because it will retrieve articles with the term in the CAS Registry field (great for drug keyword searches) as well as in the MeSH field, in case the person forgets to also do a MeSH search. (Though we always stress to OR the keyword with the corresponding MeSH term so as to get unique hits from the exploded MeSH term.) It appears that .mp. gets the most hits, with .kf. getting some unique hits in MEDLINE. In CINAHL, .mp. gets the most hits.
MEDLINE:
KW Keyword Heading [Phrase Indexed]
risk factors men.kw.
The Keyword Heading (KW) field contains the Keyword Headings assigned by indexers at NLM to describe the content of an article. To retrieve every Keyword Heading that includes a particular word, search for the word in the Keyword Heading Word (KF) field. (From http://www.ovid.com/site/products/ovidguide/medline.htm)
MP Mapping Alias (TI, OT, AB, NM, HW)
breast neoplasms.mp.
In MEDLINE, it appears that .mp. searches these fields: [mp=title, original title, abstract, name of substance word, subject heading word] (My predecessor always called it as .mp. "Many Places," and that's what we call it too, as it seems an apt way to remember it. I usually utilize truncation with .mp. as well: diabet$.mp.)
TW Text Word (AB, TI)
diazepam.tw.
squibb.tw.
The Text Word (TW) field is an alias for all of the fields in a database which contain text words and which are appropriate for a subject search.
The Text Word field in MEDLINE includes Title (TI) and Abstract (AB). (From http://www.ovid.com/site/products/ovidguide/medline.htm)
CINAHL:
KW
NOT used in CINAHL; KF is also NOT used in CINAHL.
TW Text Word [Word Indexed]
placebos.tw.
febrile seizure.tw.
The Text Word (TW) field is an alias for all of the fields in a database which contain text words which are appropriate for a word search. The Text Word field in CINAHL includes the Title (TI), Abstract (AB), Instrumentation (IT), and Identifiers (ID) fields. (From http://www.ovid.com/site/products/ovidguide/nursing.htm)
MP Mapping Alias (TI, HW, AB, IT)
breast neoplasms.mp.
In CINAHL, it appears that .mp. searches these fields: [mp=title, subject heading word, abstract, instrumentation]
Please feel free to forward this email.
Take care,
