Janet,
I'm lurking down in New Zealand, and I'd be fascinated to hear the
tutor's logic - maybe it's a devious way of keeping the reference list
short and meaningful! I suspect the the tutor is using this as an
arbitrary way of encoraging them to become familiar with the
electronic format of journal articles, without perhaps having fully
thought through the ramifications of the problems you're now
encountering.
Our University has an excellent electronic journal collection, but
there are still a sizeable number of articles which lecturers want to
make available to students that simply don't exist electronically.
Where NZ copyright law permits, we have digitised these and made them
within the University electronic environment. So if a student were to
print one of those off and present it to the lecturer, would that not
also be acceptable? And if one student were to print an original copy
of an article, couldn't other students just then make very nice
copies?
Ah, the paperless society!
