Last email today, I promise. I'm looking for examples of MEDLINE MeSH terms that are not compatible with the CINAHL database. I want to know this so I can give my students concrete examples why they should not "open and re-execute a search" when changing databases in Ovid. I tell them to print out their search strategy and when they change databases, to "open and clear history." That way, they can manually type in the MeSH (listed on their printed search strategy) so they can check the MeSH Scope Notes or if the term is not used in that database, Ovid will suggest other appropriate MeSH.
Notice in the example below that for MEDLINE, acupuncture is only the profession, while in CINAHL, acupuncture is the treatment modality. I'm also interested in terms that only exist in one database. As always, I will summarize to the lists.
MEDLINE
Acupuncture Therapy: Treatment of disease by inserting needles along specific pathways or meridians. The placement varies with the disease being treated. It is sometimes used in conjunction with heat, moxibustion, acupressure, or electric stimulation.
Acupuncture: The occupational discipline of the traditional Chinese methods of ACUPUNCTURE THERAPY for treating disease by inserting needles along specific pathways or meridians. do not confuse with ACUPUNCTURE THERAPY
CINAHL
Acupuncture: The piercing of specific peripheral nerves along specific pathways or meridians with needles for therapeutic purposes. Specifics available.
Acupuncture Analgesia: The insertion of acupuncture needles at specific points in the body to relieve pain.
Acupuncture Anesthesia: The insertion of acupuncture needles at specific points in the body to produce loss of sensation. Generally used in surgical procedures.
Acupuncture Points: Specific sites along the nerves or organ meridians for inserting acupuncture needles. MERIDIANS also available.
Take care,
Tanya
