Dear all,
(usual apologies for cross-posting)
Back in December I asked on lis-medical and lis-nursing about HE
institutions subscribing to the NHS National Core Content, and
promised to fill the lists in with any useful info I gleaned. At
the time I didn't get very far, but have recently had some more
detailed information from our Acquisitions Department which I
reproduced below - we are awaiting further developments!
Best wishes,
Hazel Rothera
"I had a very helpful call from Gavin Coney of Dialog. I'll
summarise it
below - partly for my own benefit!
Dialog won the contract to supply the National Core Content to NeLH
and
the service went live in April 2004. The contract is for 3 years,
with
a possible 3 year extension. Part of the contract specified that
the
winner of the contract should be able to provide the same service to
related organisations, including HE institutions. However, this
would
obviously have to be funded by the HE institution rather than the
NHS.
Dialog have been working on this aspect and hope to publicise what
is
available, with pricing information, by March 2005.
Dialog are an agregator and so function much in the same way as the
companies we currently use, ie Ebsco and Ovid. Dialog are currently
able to provide 450 databases which they licence from the owners of
the
data. DataStar is the web searchable interface they use for all
these
databases. It also allows for linking to full text e-journals where
we
have access to these. Dialog are currently working on the pricing
for
these databases for HE, and have been talking to JISC and CHEST. We
would be able to buy some or all of the databases which make up the
NCC."
