Hello,
I have just noticed that the job profiles for librarians has been
published, and I am quite surprised to be the first to comment. (Unless I
have missed any posts, or been a little too eager with the delete button!)
I hope I am not alone in expressing concern about what I see as a certain
ambiguity in these profiles, namely the Librarian Team Leader (banded at
6) and the Librarian Service Manager (banded at 7). My particular issue
is that the initial job statement for the lower band states that the post-
holder "...may lead the development and management of a library and
information service at a single site organisation". I understood from all
the discussion that the library professional responsible for managing the
services on ANY site should be the Librarian Service Manager. Now it
looks as if this grade is reserved for LARGE library.
I have done some job matching myself (obviously not posts connected with
libraries)and I know from this experience that the "matchers" are
initially given two or three profiles, in order that they may select the
most appropriate. I am just wondering how many will go for the one with
the Band 7. Of course, I do appreciate that many of us will go through
the arduous (but, arguably, more fair) option of job evaluation, but I do
hope I am not alone in my disappointment in seeing this band attached to a
national profile.
And, while I am still on my soap-box, will someone also please explain why
a single post for a Professional Manager in IM&T - which, of course, is
banded at 8! - sits in the middle of the library profiles.
For once in my life I hope I have my facts wrong (not a very professional
admission!) and hope that my colleagues will assuage my misgivings.
