if I could commute from Scotland (sunny today - unusual for the west coast) I would be there grovelling. Oysters and museums...................... bliss
I hope the local tourist board pays you a retainer!
Have a good weekend, Juliet

Never lend books, for no one ever returns them. The only books I have in my library are books that other folks have leant me.

The following advert appears in the current gazette and has been posted on
the NHS e-recruitment site for some time.

It occurs to me that there are 2 reasons that might account for low response
rates whenever I advertise - the perception that we are out in the sticks
and the dread word "Essex". So can I assure anyone thinking about this post
that we are 40 minutes by intercity http://www.onerailway.com/
<http://www.onerailway.com/> from London and that Colchester
http://www.colchesterguide.co.uk/ <http://www.colchesterguide.co.uk/>
itself has a good shopping centre including most of the major chains and
some interesting one offs such as the fabulous independent and award winning
department store Williams and Griffin http://www.williegee.com/intro.html
<http://www.williegee.com/intro.html> .

The new A120 means that we are half an hour from Stansted Airport
http://www.baa.co.uk/main/airports/stansted/
<http://www.baa.co.uk/main/airports/stansted/> and under an hour from
Cambridge http://www.visitcambridge.org/ <http://www.visitcambridge.org/>
by car. Norwich http://www.visitnorwich.co.uk/index.jsp
<http://www.visitnorwich.co.uk/index.jsp> is about an hour and a half away.
And if you want to drive down to Ashford you can be in Paris or Lille
http://www.eurostar.com/dctm/jsp/index.jsp
<http://www.eurostar.com/dctm/jsp/index.jsp> in time for lunch and home in
time for tea.

Colchester is not the Essex of popular myth
http://news.independent.co.uk/uk/this_britain/story.jsp?story=604597
<http://news.independent.co.uk/uk/this_britain/story.jsp?story=604597> - we
have museums, a decent theatre http://www.mercurytheatre.co.uk/
<http://www.mercurytheatre.co.uk/> , access to a number of cinema complexes,
the best oysters

16> in the world, a fantastic food hall
http://www.thefoodcompany.co.uk/homepage.htm
<http://www.thefoodcompany.co.uk/homepage.htm> (eat your heart out Harvey
Nicks), a castle and park. The famous Beth Chatto gardens
http://www.bethchatto.co.uk/ <http://www.bethchatto.co.uk/> are just up the
road - as is the seaside and Freeport discount designer village
http://www.freeport-braintree.com/ <http://www.freeport-braintree.com/> !
Constable country is just down the road as is Suffolk with all its lovely
villages. As part of East Anglia we also have some of the driest weather in
the country (says she - looking out on the rain!)

So go on - apply today - you know you want to!!

ASSISTANT LIBRARIAN

 <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"
/>

Administrative & Clerical Grade 5

Postgraduate Medical Centre

Colchester General Hospital

Hours - 37 per week including one evening to be arranged.

Are you ready to fly?

We've done it again! Another fabulous Assistant Librarian has started here,
developed the service and themselves, chartered, grown wings and flown off
to a great career start. Can you follow in their footsteps?

Are you a recently qualified librarian wanting to work towards chartered
status with CILIP? Do you have the kind of excellent communication skills
that make you equally at home on a one-to-one training session, or standing
up in front of a group to give a presentation? Do you have what it takes to
develop and promote a training service? Are you confident about searching
the medical literature? Are you keen to learn? If this sounds like you then
you could be the ideal person to join our small and friendly team running a
busy multidisciplinary library in an acute hospital. You'll also be part of
a network of library trainers across the East of England. We can offer you
the training and support you need to help you reach your full potential, and
the chance to work in one of the most exciting library sectors in a great
part of the country.

For an informal discussion please contact Sara Stock, Library Services
Manager on 01206 742146.
