We need to get away from the fixation on books - information should be
packaged in the most convenient way, which is quite often in book
format. But the point I was making is that it is possible to be a
librarian and have no interest in reading or literature.

I'm sure it makes sense to try to establish the information:library
connection in people's minds but trying to promote the profession with
assertions like this may be a little unwise don't you think?!

I think it is good that we've got some discussion going.

These days I try not to say I'm a librarian as when I do people start
talking about what I eventually realise must be some trendy novelist and
I
have to say I last read a novel (and indeed any book cover to cover)
about
20 years ago, and that was by Dick Francis.

I work in information, which is both trendy and exciting. We need to
make
this connection in people's minds.

Here is what must have sparked any report on the BBC this morning:

Recruitment crisis

According to a government survey, nearly a third of library staff in
England
will retire within the next ten years. About 10,800 recruits will be
needed
by 2010. Although there was an increase of 14 million visits last year,
60
per cent of library authorities say they already have difficulty filling
vacancies.

(Taken from the CILIP daily news bulletin)

Forget cardigans (which personally I never wear to work - am more of a
jacket person myself). What gets my goat is the assumption that
librarian/library = public librarian/public library, particularly as I
left
public libraries some years back just as they were starting to get rid
of
all their professional staff. Hmmm....wonder if there is any link
between
loss of qualified, trained staff and the general increase in reports
predicting doom for public libraries....!!

I may be going mad but i'm sure i heard a news item on the BBC1
Breakfast
News
programme this morning. Sorry i didn't manage to catch it all but i was
busily
sorting out all the stray cats/kittens i'm currently housing. I'm not
sure
what it was about exactly but it looked like they were talking about a
lack
of
new librarians, i could be wrong.

So we are appreciated!!! Just not widely recognised, maybe we are on
the
cusp
of becoming the next big thing...... when we see Posh or Jordan or
whatshername-that-wears-belts-across-her-chest waving e-library or OVID
pens
we will know for sure. Or maybe they could be seen wearing just the
pens -

that could be a new library uniform as previously discussed on this
list.
Maybe I have had too much coffee.

Afternoon all

Just thought you might like to hear this - I met a nurse (not from my
own
Trust) at a social occasion & when the subject of jobs came up & she
heard
mine, she said to a third party 'Oh, librarians are heroes!'

Nice to be appreciated!
