I'm sure CILIP does many good works for all sectors, just not for me
personally. I can't afford to attend any of the very valuable training
workshops they arrange. I'd rather pay an extra £10 pa subscription and get
cheaper fees to useful training events. Not all librarians are on huge
salaries, able to fund their own courses/workshops etc, and not all have
employers who are prepared or able to pay for external training.
I've been paying subs for 25 years & have attended only about 2 events in
that time (1 paid for by my employer during training & 1, recently, free). I
can't help feeling that I get virtually nothing for my money from CILIP. Why
do I keep paying out? It's one of the post requirements for most jobs that I
have applied for.
I have worked in Public libraries, in a private college & now work for the
NHS (& occasionally for a public library). My comments are relevant for all
sectors.

Subject: Re: Don't forget to vote: CILIP - A Good Thing?
I feel that I should respond to Veronica Murray's points, not least because
I'm a candidate for the office of President Elect this year - not Bruce!
I share some of the concerns raised, but in my case that's why I'm
standing. I say a bit more about my reasons for standing for President
Elect on my weblog http://snowley.typepad.com/. But I hope it is also
helpful to repeat some of them here too (I hope the other 2 candidates will
consider replying as well).
I do have a concern that CILIP is in danger of being seen chiefly as a
Public Library body - which would undo the significant improvements in
the way that it has begun to represent the whole profession since
unification.
However, I would argue that we all need to engage with CILIP to make sure
that it becomes the professional body for the whole profession, and one
that works constantly to improve the public recognition of the work that
all Librarians and Libraries do.
I would be very happy to see this become a debate about what we all, as
CILIP members, need to do next.
