Sorry for cross posting.
I would like to know of the advantages and disadvantages of having USB ports
available on library computers.
Our Trust currently uses Windows NT which does not support USB ports. We are
soon to move to Windows NT. However, I have been told by our IT Dept that
they will be disabling the USB ports because they are a security risk. We
have floppy drives, CD-RW drives and DVD reader drives available at present
(not all on the same terminals).
We get an increasing number of staff coming to the library with memory
sticks/flash drives who are unhappy that they are not able to use these in
the library. We currently explain that Windows NT does not support USB ports
and send them to the IT Dept. I can foresee that the situation will be worse
when we have to say "Sorry. All USB ports have been disabled by IT."
I should be very grateful for your comments on the pros and cons and will
summarise replies for the list.
