We're in the process of planning a Learning Gateway (aka flexible learning
centre etc.) for our FE college, to open in September. The long-term plan is
to timetable students on every course into the Learning Gateway. Once there,
they can choose from:
- Completing homework / coursework
- Following short online courses such as Vision2learn provide, for
enrichment / tutorial / PSHE plans
- Take part in groupwork with fellow students in other locations such as the
library
- Catching up on classes missed
- Completing part of their regular course which is being delivered online
(experimental!)
It's going to be supervised by facilitators, who will know their way around
the distance learning packages and the Library's subscribed online services,
and won't be a 'normal' computer room - so no students dropping in just to
check email.
We're still considering the precise details of the timetabling - whether
every subject will have Gateway time included, how much flexibility the
students will have in dividing their total time between their various
subjects... before we nail anything down we'd ideally like to see some
successful Learning Gateways in action and perhaps talk to staff about their
installation and success rate.
I'd like to hear from any college in the vague vicinity of Weymouth,
Dorset, that has a learning gateway or similar setup, and would be happy for
myself and my boss to visit them and see how they run things. Replies by
email, please!
