****Libraries in Danger: a seminar****
The Charter Suite: CILIP, 7 Ridgmount Street, London WC1E
7AE
Tuesday 26 April 2005. 9.30-4.15 pm.
A seminar presented by the CILIP Rare Books Group and
Preservation and Conservation Panel.
Rare book libraries and other special collections are being
lost and many others have survived fraught times. Small
independent libraries are at risk, but so too are
collections in larger libraries of all kinds. An
example at the moment is the threat to the Science Museum
Library. Financial constraints are often behind the
decisions to dispose of collections; but institutional
changes and politics also play their part. As a result both
of the development of the collections over the years and
the contacts forged by the curators with other similar
libraries these collections have their own cultural and
historical value beyond the value of the individual items
within them. Disposals also open up very serious questions
of legality and good faith.
The seminar will be based on case studies of libraries or
collections which are or have been in danger, drawing on
the experiences and expertise of the staff concerned. The
aims of the event are to air the issues involved and to
discuss possible ways forward.
This event is free of charge to CILIP members, but
restricted numbers mean that we need you to book your
place. Non-members of CILIP will be charged £20 (including
VAT) to cover costs. Lunch and other refreshments are
included.
Please note that the closing date for bookings is Tuesday 12
April 2005.
The full programme and booking form are available on the
