Dear Colleagues,
We are in the process of producing a community languages policy, defining
what language material we will provide in the learning centre and for which
commuinites. The college is based in Inner London and our students come
from a very wide range of linguistic backgrounds.
We are trying to create a policy which is equitable, meaningful in terms of
content and which is realistic within the budget we have.
Currently our community language collection consists of some rather old
Indic language books, with some newer Chinese, Vietnamese and Turkish
language books. We also buy a small selection of community language papers.
Our thinking is to move more towards newspapers and journals and to give
greater support to more recently arrived groups who may lack the
infrastructure of more estabilished communities.
What do other learning centres do? Your experiences and/or policies would
be very much appreciated.
Thanks,
David Keane
Deputy Learning Resources Manager
The Community College.
