Thanks to all of you who replied to my query:-
“We seem to be purchasing increasing numbers of books which come
with CD's. We are experiencing problems with them falling out of
books. Has anyone found a CD sleeve which prevents their escape -
the ones which are supplied with the books seem to have no hold.
Velcro or popper style?”
The majority of respondents store CDs separately to the books they accompany - usually at the
library desk. Some are catalogued separately and form a separate issue, others are reunited at
issue. It seems in many cases the book can be borrowed without the CD but the CD cannot be
borrowed without the book. As one library commented 'Maybe it is because of this separation
but we do not get very much call for the CDs at all - it all seems rather a waste of money (on
behalf of the publishers).'
Nobody else seems to have noticed problems with the pockets themselves. One library attaches
them with double sided tape as they are more cost effective than the ready gummed ones.
Another library has a policy of not replacing missing disks and insert a note to this effect in the
pocket.
I'm afraid, being lazy, we are going to keep them with the books but have created a message that
comes up when the barcode is entered 'Has CDs check BEFORE issue or return'. We tell the
borrower that it has been checked and it is their responsibility to return it with the CD. We will
not accept return of a book without the CD and will charge them for its non-return. If it is
missing before issue we will refer the book to the subject librarian to see if the CD needs to be
replaced. We feel that the CDs which are missing to date are partly our fault because some of the
earlier ones did not have security triggers nor were they properly labelled as our property so
some of them may have disappeared into school computers on teaching practice. We also know
that some were sliding out of the pockets so we have ordered a batch of self-adhesive velcro
poppers which we will apply to them.
Hope this is useful
