Dear All,
Many thanks for your responses regarding accredited courses in
teaching/training for Librarians. I have recently discovered that the C&G
7407 Stage 1 Further Education Teaching requires training 'real' students
(minimum 20 hours), while the C&G 7302 Delivering Learning is an opportunity
to try out a 15 minute session to the class group.
Here is a summary of the responses/options I received:
- C&G 7407 - one librarian did this and went on to complete the Cert Ed in
FE. They found the course highly appropriate.
- "... all qualified staff here have completed the C&G730 Stage 1, which I
believe has now changed into the C&G7407. We were fortunate in that it was
taught in the college. We all found it useful in giving us a basic
introduction to teaching techniques, insight into our own practice, and most
valuable of all, empathy with our teaching colleagues. It was enough but not
too much for our needs."
- C&G 7307 Introduction to the Delivery of Education' - requires less
teaching hours than the C&G 7407. Respondent knew of several librarians
completing this.
- One librarian said they completed a C&G course by "running a pilot
information skills course with Access to HE students".
- Some institutions run a course for new teachers which is accredited by the
Higher Education Academy and Librarians can do some or all of this to gain
Associate or Practitioner status. Their website is
www.heacademy.ac.uk/34.htm
- CILIP runs some courses on training skills for librarians, although may
not be 'accredited' as such.
- The University of East Anglia Centre for Staff and Educational Development
runs a Teaching Skills Programme for Postgraduate students and part-time
teachers. Not an accredited course, but a useful introduction to teaching
skills.
- The OU runs an MA in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education
http://www3.open.ac.uk/courses/bin/p12.dll?Q01C25_5
Note that one of the requirements is to be teaching at least 50 hours on an
assessed course.
- Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development course Certificate in
Training Practice. The CIPD will be able to tell you where else the course
is run. tel 020 8612 6202 or www.cipd.co.uk/training/certificates.
- OCR Certificate in ICT for Teachers/Trainers - the emphasis is more on ICT
than on teaching and training, "...so I occasionally benefit from the course
in terms of techniques in training students ICT-related tasks".
Much appreciated - I shall follow up some of these leads.
Have a good Bank Hol.
