Vacancies for freelance cataloguers with Artifact
Artifact is seeking librarians, lecturers, postgraduate research students, and practitioners in the arts to undertake freelance cataloguing for its Internet Resource Catalogue. The work involves the selection, description and cataloguing of quality online resources for an initial period of 3 months.
Artifact www.artifact.ac.uk discovers, evaluates and catalogues online resources in the arts and creative industries which are of use to students, teachers and researchers in UK Higher and Further Education. These resources are then freely accessible via the fully searchable Artifact Internet Resource Catalogue.
Artifact is part of the national Resource Discovery Network www.rdn.ac.uk funded by the JISC (Joint Information Services Committee www.jisc.ac.uk and is based at Manchester Metropolitan University Library, with key partners at the University of the Arts London and South Cheshire College of Further Education.
Freelance Cataloguers: responsible for discovering, evaluating, describing and cataloguing online resources suitable for inclusion within the Artifact service. You must be able to identify new resources, and judge their quality and relevance for your subject area. This work should be done in your own time from any UK location. The rate of pay will be £125.00 per month, for which 10 new records must be added and 10 record reviews undertaken (£10.00 per record and £2.50 per review). Each new record must meet the Artifact selection and cataloguing criteria, for which guidelines will be supplied. Full training and support will also be provided.
This role will contribute to the quality of the Artifact service and its usefulness and relevance to the academic community.
Applicants should:
* have, or be nearing completion of, a degree or higher degree in an arts subject that is supported by Artifact (see major subjects below); or have a professional library qualification preferably with experience of working as an arts subject librarian;
* have excellent written English skills and be able to proof-read your work against cataloguing and editorial guidelines;
* be familiar with key Web resources in your subject area, and, ideally, have used online resources to assist your research and teaching;
* be computer-literate and comfortable entering data into Web-based forms;
* be able to take part in training, both online and at either Manchester Metropolitan University or the University of the Arts London;
* be available for work between May and July 2005
* be able to work to timetables and tight deadlines.

* Music & the Performing Arts
* Visual Arts
