Suzanne,
Did the course leader give any idea why s/he felt it was unsuitable? I had a look at a few websites and the teaching hours requirement does seem quite high. There is a C&G 7307 which has a lower teaching hours requirement, which might be easier to achieve. I have known several librarians complete this (or possibly it's predecessor as I think the C&G courses were re-organised recently).
Some institutions run a course for new teachers which is accredited by the Higher Education Academy and Librarians can do some or all of this to gain Associate or Practitioner status. It might be worth having a look at their website at <www.heacademy.ac.uk/34.htm> even if your institution doesn't offer this.
CILIP runs some courses on training skills for librarians but I'm not sure if they're accredited in the way you are looking for.

Subject: Accredited Courses in Training for Librarians
Dear All,
Does anyone know of or can recommend any accredited courses suitable for
Librarians working in education with regard to training? As a Librarian I
would be keen to hear from you, as I was advised by the Course Leader of
City & Guilds 7407 course that this would be inappropriate for Library
staff.
Much appreciated,
